Just maintaining weight is a challenge most days, and losing weight on the 4th of July with picnics and parties on the day’s agenda may seem impossible.

With just a bit of advance planning, this one day can actually be an ideal one for losing weight.  Combine nutritious foods and exercise with activities involving family and friends.  Keep moving and focus on the people rather than the food.

Consider how great you’ll look in your sundress or muscle shirt for the rest of the summer, and use the steps below to lose weight on the 4th of July.  Feel good, look good and be the healthiest you can be after just one day on the road to your weight loss success.

Instructions
Step 1

Eat a small, but healthy breakfast and don’t skimp, thinking you’ll save the calories for later.  By the time lunch or suppertime arrives you’ll be too hungry to take care in your food choices.

Step 2

Plan your meals for the day.  If one of the meals is a picnic or party away from home, you can still plan to look for raw vegetables minus the dip, salads with fresh vegetables topped with olive oil and vinegar, and grilled meats.

Step 3

Select your beverages carefully.  On a hot, humid July day, particularly if you're outdoors for most of the day, you’ll want to drink plenty of water. Limit the number of carbonated beverages, even if they are diet.

Step 4

Avoid or seriously limit alcoholic beverages.  Not only do they lack nutrients for good health, but also too much alcohol can make you forget your goal. One lite beer or one small glass of red or white wine is enough.

Step 5

Bring your own place setting to picnics and you can choose the size.  A 9” plate is the ideal size.  If place settings will be provided, measure out 9” on your arm before you leave home so you’ll have some way to check the plate size.

Step 6

Devote one-half of the plate to vegetables; even an ear of corn, without butter, is a good selection.  One-quarter of the plate is for protein, meat or otherwise.  The remaining one-quarter of the plate is for foods such as rice, potato, or a hamburger bun.  Keep in mind that a healthy portion of meat is about the size of the palm of your hand and only 3-4 ounces cooked.

Step 7

Skip dessert.  If you have a craving for something sugary, remember that fresh fruit contains natural sugars.  Bring an apple on your travels so you’ll have a healthy dessert or snack if one isn’t available.

Step 8

Grab more raw veggies after a meal, if you feel full yet still have the urge to chew.

Step 9

Move.  Sitting burns few calories.  Being active burns many more.  And when you’re not walking or playing softball, simply stand up and burn more calories than you would if seated.

Step 10

Eat less.  Play more. Join in any games that keep you on your feet.  Otherwise, take a long walk after eating.  Invite others to join you.

Will power
9” dinner plate
Dish to pass (fresh vegetables or fresh fruits)
Olive oil and vinegar for salad (optional)

Tips & Warnings
Portion control is important.
Eat. Skipping meals and snacks is not a healthy, lasting way to take off the pounds.
Drink lots of water and other non-alcoholic fluids, particularly when in the sun for hours on a hot, humid day. Not only will it keep you hydrated and healthy, but also it will contribute to that full feeling.
If you’ll be at a picnic or buffet meal, take your plate and sit as far away as possible from the food.
No second trip to the food table.
